What is a Lumumba?

Lumumba is a chocolate-based cocktail that is named after the Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, who was assassinated in 1961. The cocktail is traditionally made with hot chocolate, rum, and whipped cream.
The cocktail is quite popular in Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands, where it is also known as "Tote Tante" in German and "Død tante" in Danish.
Sweet and creamy, the cocktail can be served either hot or on ice. Making it perfect for cold winter evenings or warm summer days!

Hot Lumumba

Ingredients for 2 drinks:

  • 80ml / 2.7fl.oz. dark rum
  • 400ml /13.6fl.oz. milk or milk alternative
  • 6 tsp cocoa powder
  • 4 tsp sugar
  • 4 tbsp whipped cream
  • 2 tsp chocolate sprinkles

Preparation:

Heat the milk in a pot and add the sugar and cocoa powder. Mix well.
When the milk comes to the boil, add 40 ml / 1.4fl.oz. rum to each RIEDEL Drink Specific Glassware Rocks glass and pour the hot chocolate milk on top.
Add the whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles for decoration. Enjoy!
